What are some hobbies that don't involve consuming anything? You purchase a 1 time item and very rarely if ever have to replace it. Learning yo-yo tricks would be a consumptionless hobby in this case. There are obviously thinks like whistling or playing the spoons too. The idea is it has to make as little foot print as possible while being something you can develop and grow at. Drawing wouldn't count because you need paper.

If you do end up working stone I highly recommend taking ventilation and breathing protection seriously.
The dust from that stuff fucks your lungs. It really doesn't take a lot to cause issues.

Would a mask be enough?

 No.66817

>>66815
Depends on the mask and the general setup.

Like if you are cutting/grinding stuff wet then there would be very little dust. It which case a mask might not even be needed.

But if you were powdering silica in a hermetically sealed room with not even the faintest of air flow, while wearing a ski mask, bro you gonna die.

 No.66828

>>66815
depends heavily on the particle size

if you are chiseling and carving stone by hand outside you dont need anything crazy

if you are sawing, grinding, cutting, etc and producing dust, then you need an air filter and dust collection and a mask tbh

for wood if you work by hand, you can cut, saw, drill, chisel, etc and you dont need a mask. the moment you use powered tools though you need dust collection and air filtering and sometimes a mask

i built a shelf outside today and the dust was so bad i had to walk away after every cut and wait for it to settle. this was with a breeze too

Anyone else just really like the feeling and use of a Mechanical Keyboard? Recently picked one up from my local Walmart for $70. Old Razer 2019 BlackWidow and it feels nice. Wondering if anyone else likes them too.

We ALLL fuckin' know the greatest mechanical keyboard of all time was an IBM Model M keyboard. It was made out of mahogany wood, finished with real ivy keys, and featured 100% silk liners for the hand rests.

Our family of modest earners saved up for years to afford one of these key boards but after working so long we finally did it. Every day its become something of a ritual for us to gather around the dining room table to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the keyboard. An optional attachment goes over the keyboard to obscure visibility of the parts which turns the keyboard into a fingerbox. The wiz family can be entertained for hours trying to guess exactly which parts they are touching inside the 'fingerbox.' It's made many boring days quite exciting and I would recommend this to other IBM M keyboard owners.

There are a switches that are around the same noise level as membrain keyboards.

That said I love the clicky ones, so I can understand someone not really liking them, especially if they love silence.

>>65785
Surprisingly it actually is.
Especially when you get into custom key and switch combinations and building and modifying keyboards.
There are also people who collect them.
For me it isn't quite to the level of a hobby, but I do like them quite a bit and would be happy to talk about them for hours.

I saw a keyboard the other day that looked like a type writer. Do you think something like that would be cool to own?

 No.66280

>>66257
It wouldn't be to my personal taste.
Then again I don't exactly have fond memories of typewriters.
They are clunky cumbersom devices that make revision and word processing so difficult that it is sometimes better to just retype a whole page then try to fix a relatively small error.

I hated learning to type on them as a child.
So I have no fondness for typewriters and would not like to own something that reminds me of them.

Recently I've become fascinated with tessellation and spent the past couple of weeks collecting pictures of mosaics from around the world. Eventually just looking at them was not enough and I want to go deeper, understand the geometric shapes and its secrets better. Not even sure why but periodic tiling feels like a brain massage to me, like I'm about to fall out of bottom of how I usually perceive the world around me. So I picked up the book Geometry by Cambridge University Press. Feel free to give a hollow laugh: I honestly thought I could just skip the math part of geometry (yes I'm an idiot) and appreciate its resulting surfaces. While you can do that, if you want to appretiate geometry even at a surface level, you need to know the bare minimum of maths. The book suggested a good grasp on the basics of linear algebra and algebraic structure. I thought 'OK, I'll read the wiki entries as a lazy primer' and quickly realized I forgot even the basics of mathematical symbols. I guess it's true after all, if you don't use it you lose it.

Long story short, I'm currently going through Pure Mathematics for Beginners. The good part of being dumb is when you learn a single thing it feels like a whole new world just opened up and it feels really good.

So yeah, maths thread.

Usually, most of the questions aren't 'unique'; if there are 40 questions, most of them are just differently stated versions of the same question.

If you believe you understand the subject matter but still struggle with exercises, try looking up the answer to one of the questions you are having trouble with and attempt to solve similar questions on your own.

doing the problems is how you develop maths intuition tho?

 No.66920

I'm the person who started this thread. Since someone bumped it I might as well say I kept going until reaching differential calculus. I filled about 2 notebooks with exercises. After that, about a month ago, I stopped with math focused books and picked up a textbook on electronics. It's amazing how much math helps in understanding things like magnetic fields and just electricity in general. I could even predict some of the behaviors on the theoretical part of the text. I really feel I'm making good progress, can't wait until I reach the meat of the thing and start reading schematics and study electronic components.

and what would be the non anglo one? and also the right one? can you give me a list on where to start philosophy, maybe like you said, history of philosophy?

 No.65213

>>65212
well Anglo-American philosophy is dominated by Analytical philosophy, which thinks many traditional problems can be resolved with language, logic and semantics. That philosophy problems are not in the world, but in language.

Continental Philosophy is more into metaphysics and the being of the world.

If starting from square 1, I think Will Durant and Bertrand Russell's history of philosophies are well-written although a bit dated and biased towards their personal focuses. The 1st towards Pragmatism, the 2nd towards Positivism.

I know a lot of people would tell you to go straight to primary texts, and read the philosophers themselves. But when I was a beginner I found secondary histories and commentary much more useful.

I also found The Teaching Company lectures useful, it might be at your library.

Like I really liked Sugrue's Stoicism lecture. I think his whole course is on his channel now, so thats a good place to start as well.

>>62420

>>62197
I think that is a neat summary of the human condition. I suppose you don’t get that answer terribly often because people usually prefer to stick to intuitive and immediately evident frameworks.

>>62658
What I find most interesting with Schoppenhauer’s worldview is that while we “possess” a will, it’s more accurate to say that our will possesses us. Consider us as a machine, or if you are familiar, a neural network. The will is the incentive and what we identify with as “I” is the conscious process of identifying the best way to achieve the desires of the will. It is very akin to slavery, slavery to oneself. Perhaps worse than any other kind of slavery. And to deny the will is to die. Choose slavery or death.

 No.65673

>>65672
yeah schop was a big fan of hinduism, thou art that. so the will is the universe, and you are the will.

Schop's feelings on the Will seem to me mixed. Like he's not an entire pessimist anti-natalist, anti-life who just completely he hates the Will. He appreciates its volcanic power. And thinks rationality and anything we throw in the Will's way is futile. He thinks art and music are the purest expression of the Will and he doesn't think they are evil.

rationally it would be best to overcome the will, and he sees that as through asceticism not suicide. although his claim that suicide asserts the will, because we hate a bad life, but we dont hate life itself. can be questioned.

so asceticism is rational but rare.

he actually praises poverty as "involuntary trappists", men who have to live like poor monks, even though they didnt choose it. and he sees that as good in its way. easier than recruiting voluntary monks.

"involuntary traps" is like Schop using an early version of the term involcel.

 No.66873

Most of us here who are atheists became so because the world is evil. And this is what Hume had to say on that-

This year most of my plants (zucchinis, strawberries, cucumbers) got messed up with the heat waves, tomatoes are really the only thing I have left. I don't want summer to end, going back to eating store vegetables and fruit is soul crushing. Not much money so no fancy organic food.

Do you garden? How long? What plants?
How do you deal with having to go back to tasteless store vegetables during winter?

greenhouse test. just to see how long it can extend growing season into winter. i want to see in parricular if it can keep my peppers alive. it sucks when perennial plants die from the cold

 No.66610

my peppers got some sort of pests burrowing through a couple of them. Probably because they're too mild. Apparently it's common to order pepper seeds for one species and receive seeds for a different species. That is what happened to me and I think they are anaheim instead of what I ordered. My cucumbers were similarly productive but succumbed to some sort of disease or virus. Eggplants grew a shit ton of leaves but few fruits and only a few got to eating size. I don't think we have enough light where they were.

 No.66612

Recently I've been doing a lot of clearing. I have been slashing down a bunch of native shrubs and trees that cover up spaces and many other plants that I've planted myself. I usually let them grow, especially ij spring, so that they create some microclimate during the harsh summer. Now that the days are getting shorter and the sun is less bright I can clear up these spaces, and open them up for the plants below. The leaves make for gold mulch and I can use the trunks and branches for firewood. Everythijg used to look so lush, now it looks a little empty in contrast.
I also want to bring in many new plants to fill up some of this space, as it turns there's a lot of it! I plan to bring some small trees and shrubs and hope that within the next 5 years they grow big and themselves cover the ground from the sun, as well as provide a lot of fruit.
I have also been broadcasting a lot of vine seeds, mostly curcubitae, such as pumpkin and luffa, but also others like passionfruit. I want lots of trees with vines hanging from them full of fruit, and pumpkin vines crawling along the ground.

well everything else has died from the cold but my peppers and everything inside the greenhouse are still alive, so i consider this a big success, even if it does eventually get too cold in a few weeks, it definitely extended the growing season and should let me start planting early also.
